Montana ROC builds only playground within 30 miles with grant

Posted by April Myers February 2, 2024

Golden Age Village is a 49-home cooperative purchased by residents in August 2022. Located in rural Emigrant, Mont., the nearest grocery stores are at least 30 miles away. Amenities are also scarce, including playgrounds – there are none within 30 miles of the Co-op. With more young families moving into the community, there was a need for an outdoor area for children. Golden Age Village was awarded $2,000 to build a safe, interactive, community playground in a common area of the ROC for families with young children.

The Better Together Grants are funded by ROC USA and awarded by the ROC Association Directors each year. Grants of up to $2,000 are typically available. Any ROC with a current or past Technical Assistance Contract with a ROC USA Certified TA Provider is eligible to apply. Awardees of the previous year’s Grants are not eligible to apply. The Better Together Grants program opens once per year. This year, the application period opens April 5, with applications due May 5.

Until recently, there were no playgrounds within 30 miles of Golden Age Village. With more young families moving into the community, community leaders saw a need and put a $2,000 Better Together grant toward building a safe, interactive, community playground in a common area of the ROC for families with young children.
