Sowing and Growing in Montana

Posted by Mike Bullard May 7, 2015

Members of Buena Vista Community are investing in their ROC and their summertime dinner plates by building a community garden that is sure to pay leafy dividends in a few months.

As Maggie Ross at NeighborWorks® Montana (Buena Vista’s Certified Technical Assistance Provider) said:

An empty lot in Buena Vista has transformed into a space for gardening and community. The garden came to fruition with the work of the garden committee, headed by experienced gardener and longtime resident, Lola Bergseng. The garden features ten raised beds and a tool shed, and plans are in the works to add a fence, bonfire pit, and picnic table. Various organizations in Missoula supported the process including 1000 New Gardens, Garden City Harvest and the National Wildlife Federation.

Buena Vista’s had one other special source of information — Linda Sprague of Medomak MHP in Waldoboro, Maine. Linda attended the Community Leadership Institute in Cincinnati last fall, where she talked about the successful community garden she created and manages in her own ROC. Two Buena Vista residents, Terry and Sheryl Huetter, also attended CLI where they met Linda, who was able to offer suggestions and tips as the Buena Vista crew began planning and eventually constructing their gardens.

The Buena Vista garden has hit the local media. To read more, read the article online here. Special thanks to Maggie Ross for sending photos!
