Margaret Jones from Mountainside Community Cooperative in Maine will tell you herself how much of an advocate she is for manufactured housing and resident ownership. In fact, in this episode of Ownership Matters, Paul and Mike talk to Margaret about all the work she’s done for her community and beyond. From her recent appointment to Maine’s State Manufactured Housing Board to her involvement in the tour of Mountainside Community during the push for the PRICE Fund in 2022, she has been busy and continues to be passionate about advocacy work. She doesn’t hesitate to encourage her fellow manufactured home residents and ROC leaders to join her in the good fight. Margaret Jones has been Board President of Mountainside Community Cooperative in Camden, Maine since it became a ROC in 2019. She is also a member of Maine ROC Strong and the ROC Association Policy and Advocacy Committee. After 25 years, she retired from her corporate career. While living in New Jersey, she worked in the corporate equipment engineering division of a major global shipping container company. She also spent 10 years in the air pollution control industry. As a native Mainer, Margaret returned to the state where she is near her lifelong connection to the water and traditional sailing.
1:20 – What is Mountainside Community Cooperative like?
In the winter, Margaret explains, Camden is relatively quiet and serene. In the summer, however, it attracts a large number of people who want to experience all of the nature and activities coastal Maine has to offer. Mountainside Community Cooperative is located between the ocean, the mountains and the lake. They are a 55+ resident-owned community with 52 homes.
3:00 – What brought Margaret back to Maine?
After living out of state for many years, Margaret eventually moved back to Maine. As a renter at the time, she realized that she was aging and preferred a more stable living situation. She was lucky enough to find Mountainside, which was owned by a very responsible park owner. When the park owner decided to retire, he put the community in touch with ROC USA. They went through the process and became a resident-owned community just 4 years ago. When they needed people to step up into leadership, Margaret volunteered and has been Board President ever since.

Mountainside Community Cooperative recently hosted policy makers as part of the ROC Association’s push to secure passage of the PRICE Fund. There were four representatives from HUD, reps from the Senator’s office and other reps from the state of Maine, who visited four parks in the area, including Mountainside. It was a very successful day for the community members. The visit established a true sense of awareness of how things really operate in manufactured communities. The PRICE Fund is designed to help resident-owned manufactured communities improve their serious infrastructure problems. Margaret sheds light on their desperate need to update Mountainside’s sewer system, a need which could be addressed through the PRICE Fund.
9:40 – Margaret’s role on the State Manufactured Housing Board
Janet Mills, the governor of Maine, recently appointed Margaret to the State Manufactured Housing Board. Governor Mills wanted someone who actually lived in a manufactured housing community to fill this role, and someone recommended Margaret for the job. As a resident-owned community member, Margaret feels that it is the responsibility of all residents to be advocates for manufactured housing communities in public in order to reverse its negative reputation.

Margaret reflects on the fun process of applying to be a ROC to finally actually becoming one. Now, everyone in the community knows each other and there is a very warm, friendly, neighborly environment.
15:45 – Margaret shares her takeaways from the I’m HOME conference.
This past summer, Margaret attended the I’m HOME conference in Chicago with the ROC Association and ROC USA. She took a deep dive into the work ROC USA does nationally. She reflects on the ways this helped draw her into the bigger picture of manufactured housing communities, issues and framework. Her eyes were opened to the nationwide landscape of affordable housing options outside of her own community.
