On today’s episode of Ownership Matters, Mike checks in with ROC Association Board President Marjory Gilsrud from Madelia Mobile Village in Madelia, Minnesota. Marjory is fresh back from a trip to Washington, D.C., where she attended the ROC USA Board of Directors meeting, held some strategic planning meetings for the ROC Association, and made two visits to Capitol Hill to meet with policymakers in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. In those meetings, she advocated for infrastructure funding for Resident Owned Communities nationwide. We also talk about ways other ROC Members can get involved through two ROC Association committees.

Marjory Gilsrud is the ROC Association Board President. She is leading the Association through some new changes alongside her two other fellow ROC Association Directors. Marjory is also the Board President of Madelia Mobile Village in Madelia, Minnesota. She has been an active participant on the national level for quite some time. When she isn’t busy serving her own co-op and co-ops nationwide, she works as a DSP helping disabled and elderly people.
2:59 – What is the ROC Association?
Every ROC community out there is a part of the ROC Association. When it comes to voting, each community gets one vote so representation is equal regardless of the community size. Each of the three regions in the U.S. have one elected director who represents all of the communities in their region.

Their top goal is to inspire people to get involved and help others. Rather than fighting for the things they want, they are fighting for the things they want other people to experience.
8:27 – The Directors’ recent trip to Washington DC
The three elected ROC Association Directors attended board meetings and visited congressional offices to discuss the future of the Association. Marjory was also able to meet with staff of House of Representative members and told them that her community is in need of a tornado shelter. She recalls the huge success of their two trips to Capitol Hill at which each director shared the needs of their regions. The funding they advocated for could go a long way in bringing down the costs of infrastructure repairs for ROC Members.
15:43 – The need for ROC leaders to join the Association
Every first Wednesday of the month, ROC leaders host a “Better Together” call, during which they discuss topics of interest people have questions about and feature guest speakers. If a community has a problem, they are encouraged to bring it up to other leaders and hear their experiences and advice. It’s understandable that most people don’t yet feel comfortable speaking directly to politicians or large crowds. However, Marjory says, people are encouraged to help as much as they want to and any way they can.
19:05 – Expanding the Board of Directors
More than 50 new communities have joined the ROC Association since 2019, calling for the need for Board expansion to better serve the three regions. Marjory’s area as a director covers all the midwest, which is a lot for only one person. During the annual ROC Association meeting in June, they proposed the idea of adding to the Board of Directors. They received a favorable response and are in the process of putting together the details on that. It will require a vote soon which will go out to all communities. Marjory shares that she also plans to re-run for her position as Director in the upcoming election.

Marjory Gilsrud es la presidenta de la junta de la Asociación ROC. Ella está liderando la Asociación a través de algunos cambios junto a sus dos colegas directores de la Asociación ROC. Marjory es también presidenta de la junta de Madelia Mobile Village en Madelia, Minnesota. Ella ha sido una participante activa a nivel nacional por cierto tiempo. 2:59 – ¿Qué es la Asociación ROC?
Cada comunidad ROC que existe es parte de la Asociación ROC. Cuando se trata de votar, cada comunidad tiene un voto lo que hace que la representación sea igual sin importar el tamaño de la comunidad. Cada una de las tres regiones en los EE. UU. tiene un director elegido quien representa a todas las comunidades en su región.

Su objetivo principal es inspirar a las personas para que se involucren y ayuden a los demás. En vez de pelear por las cosas que ellos quieren, están luchando por las cosas que quieren que otras personas experimenten.

Los tres directores electos de la Asociación ROC asistieron a las reuniones de la junta y visitaron oficinas congresionales para dialogar acerca del futuro de la Asociación. Marjory también pudo reunirse con el personal de la Cámara de Representantes y les dijo que su comunidad necesita un refugio en caso de tornados. Ella recuerda el gran éxito de los dos viajes que hicieron a Capitol Hill en el cual cada director compartió las necesidades de sus regiones. El financiamiento por el que ellos abogaron podría ayudar mucho a reducir los costos de las reparaciones de infraestructura para los Miembros de ROC.
15:43 – La necesidad de que más líderes de ROC se unan a la Asociación
Cada primer miércoles del mes, los líderes de ROC realizan una llamada de “Juntos Somos Mejores”, durante la cual discuten temas de interés sobre los que las personas tienen preguntas e invitan a oradores invitados. Si una comunidad tiene un problema, se les exhorta llevar el problema a otros líderes y escuchar sobre sus experiencias y sus consejos. Es comprensible que la mayoría de las personas no se sientan cómodas hablando directamente a los políticos o frente a grupos grandes. Sin embargo, dice Marjory, se estimula a las personas a ayudar tanto como quieran y en cualquier manera que puedan.
19:05 – Expandiendo la Junta Directiva
Más de 50 nuevas comunidades se han unido a la Asociación ROC desde el 2019, lo que ha generado la necesidad de expandir la Junta para que brinde mejor servicio a las tres regiones. El área de Marjory como directora cubre todo el mediooeste, lo cual es mucho para una sola persona. Durante la reunión anual de la Asociación ROC en junio, ellos propusieron la idea de agregar a la Junta Directiva. Ellos recibieron una respuesta favorable y están en el proceso de reunir todos los detalles para lograrlo. Esto va a requerir que haya una votación pronto que estará abierta para todas las comunidades. Marjory comparte que ella también tiene planes de volver a postularse para su posición de directora en las próximas elecciones.
